We had a wonderful time, conversation & dinner. It was very enjoyable. When we have the new chef, we shall arrange to have you come over for dinner again. Ben & Louisa

  • Dear Lilyan and Douglas:

Thanks for the wonderful dinner and conversation. I have been busy in the past few days as I came across an interesting paper. It is not what I do; but has implications that require some thinking. Please see the attached and you can see that it has potentials. Of course, we want to use it for a different application and change the materials used as well.

How to keep cool without costing the Earth Science, Ronggui Yang and Xiaobo Yin of the University of Colorado, in Boulder, have a possible alternative to all this. They have invented a film that can cool buildings without the use of refrigerants and, remarkably, without drawing any power to do so. Better yet, this film can be made using standard roll-to-roll manufacturing methods at a cost of around 50 cents a square metre. My: http://intersci.ss.uci.edu/wiki/Feb112017Economist-FilmBenChu.pdf

David Fenby: I thought I’d mention that Ben Chu, with whom I did my post-doc work at SUNY Stony Brook, and his wife have recently set up home in La Jolla (La Jolla Village, 8515 Costa Verde Blvd). Ben is very much like you Doug: highly talented; totally dedicated; bewildering output; wide international collaboration; in his 80s, still bringing in more research funding than his colleagues at SUNY.
