Well, if you get a new puppy, you will have to agree to adopt Connor for a while when he sees it. He won't want to leave.

Also, I am very curious to hear what you both think about the recent French elections. I know you both keep a careful eye on that country and have for some time. Dao showed me a linked in post he got last night with a picture of the guy, who apparently won, with a quote to the effect that 'there is no longer a French culture.' We both laughed our asses off about it, but Dao did mention that he thought it was a joke because he is in an international politics group on linked in where people try to provoke on purpose. I truly hope this guy doesn't think that for real, otherwise, he is clearly a victim of a condition called "negative intelligence." How do you spot it you might ask? Well, for people with this affliction, as soon as they leave the room you are in with them, you automatically sense that there is in fact more there.

Hi Doug,

I hope you are still doing well and are past recovery stage. Sorry I have been so quite recently. However, EXCELLENT NEWS: I just started a new job as Research Analyst IV (highest in their series) with the Orange County Social Services Agency!!!

The advertised job description reads like I would be working on evaluation programs, etc., much like I used to do on grants at UCI and when I worked for the Orange County Department of Education. So far (only 1 week of observation) it looks to be more like program support, budget analysis, etc. We'll see, I have a fantastic boss who is already going to bat for me against her manager who tried to put me in a SQL training/transition group based upon me saying in my interview that I had taken one course in intro database online from Stanford. You can guess that they already have a tenuous history, but she has been there almost 20 years, and he has only been there 2-3 years. Apparently, I replaced a top notch Indian woman whom he seriously mistreated. The County currently has a really really old legacy database system that they really do need to replace, so there is some need for exploring options. In addition, I am already signed up for arcGIS training, which I have always been interested in thanks to you exposing us to it in the first couple years of the social networks program.

The other issue was that, based upon my interview, resume, and the articles I helped publish and she actually read, she made a detailed case to him (admittedly during a hiring freeze) to start me at step 6 of a 12 step (no, not the AA steps...) pay scale. He apparently completely ignored her and I was offered step 1. Still, it is not bad as it starts at $65k. I have a 6 month review at which time she is guaranteeing me a 2 step bump. Next, in 12 months is my end of probation period review which she is already telling me she intends to push for another 3 step bump. Top end at step 12 is currently around $87k. There is also already a 2.5% COLA effective in July and a $500 bonus in December thanks to the very active union I now belong to.

Very diverse workplace too. My boss is Vietnamese, and her boss and my other team colleague are Chinese.

It really is the last job I will need. Because I'm starting the job at age 50, I can't retire right away, but that's ok, I have a sense already that I will be well taken care of. In fact, I have already been thanked repeatedly for actually accepting the position, and have practically been begged to stay on for a while. Who knew? After an over 4 year period of unemployment, this is such a great change.

Dao and I were thinking of coming down to visit you guys sometime in the near future. Connor too because he likes your dog (Hope you don't mind that he is extremely anti-Trump... but I doubt it you ulta-liberal you....) I'll let you know when I know more.

Cheers,

Fitz

This matters because it might significantly impact how best to go about implementing what you need. He has agreed to help if he can, depending upon his own obligations and his health.
