Generating processes

for questions like "how do the frequencies of items/cities/whatever vary as a function of their size/number of network links" --> crucial questions concerned with modeling the processes that generate what we see in our research world -- i.e. are these processes driven by

power law (e.g. rich get richer)
open system entropy more random at lower energy, power-law asymptote at higher energy
lognormal
normal (bell curve for random errors around a mean)
etc.
