Math Anth comment

Absolutely. In fact it turned out to be useful for more than what I originally aimed. One of my students is thinking about ways to model the transition among the different stages of household structure in the community where she works (the Yi of SW China) and lo and behold you have a whole section on that very topic. Hers is a society undergoing transition from matriliny to patriliny and she's interested in what causes individual familes to make the switch. But the approach you lay out for thinking about transitions over time among different household compositions under "normal" conditions will help a lot!
