Economics Faculty

Dear Colleagues:

Welcome back! I hope you had a restful and enjoyable holiday.

As we contemplate the year ahead, I want to take a moment to recap some of the highlights of the past year. UC Irvine was named the number one university in the nation, and number four university in the world, under 50 years of age by Times Higher Education. We were also named to the Sierra Club's top-10 list for environmental sustainability - for the third year in a row. The Regents approved our new School of Education in recognition of its longtime excellence and impact as a department. The School of Law graduated its first class, which went on to achieve the second-highest bar passage rate in the state and the highest percentage of judicial clerkships in the entire nation. We also graduated the first students from the CalTeach program and the first undergraduate class from the Merage School of Business. We welcomed the most competitive (from more than 70,000 applications for undergraduate admission) and diverse (representatives from all 50 states and 83 foreign countries) freshman class in our history. Our men's volleyball team won the national championship for the third time in the past six years, and we even reclaimed the world record for the largest dodgeball game.

All in all, 2012 was a very good year for UC Irvine, and our momentum has not slowed in 2013. Last week Kiplinger magazine named us to its top 20 "Best Values in Public Colleges" list. And this week we are holding the grand opening of our new Newkirk Alumni Center and the groundbreaking celebration for the Merage School's new state-of-the-art building. Wow!

Each of you plays a vital role in our success. Thank you for all you do to support our mission, and best wishes for a happy, healthy, and productive 2013!
