Essay 3: Hypothesis test (SCCS) on how a pair of topics relate
Hypothetical outline (guideline for paper) found here
For the third essay (you can choose to stick with your topic from essay 2 or not), you want to build an argument about what might be going on between one variable and another. Choose two variables that are NOT obviously related.
Your crosstabs should show two significance tests:
1. Cramer's
2. Kendall's
(3. Phi)
-you can use .05 as the cutoff
Essay 4: Sustainability comparison
Practice on how to see correlations on maps (we are working with the Failed States Index 2007).
Argument made from the "War" book: You can't study complex systems without knowing their history.
Structural Cohesion: not just a chain of links, but designed where information can flow in different ways..through the use of nodes that connect things together.---point being, you have to think about how countries are connected, not just by doing correlations with data.
For paper, take one of the chapters from Diamond's book and one of your countries from paper 1...key to this paper is to try to write a paper that puts together how to confront a complex system...how do you think about this in a non-linear, complex way. Possibly due a crosstab, copy/paste a map, or do correlations with data-use data and try to find trends.
