David Kronenfeld B., Michael Fischer D., Victor de Munck C., Giovanni Bennardo -- Wiley Authors

Dear David, Mike, Victor and Giovanni, July 2017

I’ve been working on a proposal for Wiley (Joe White), “A Companion to Cross-Cultural Anthropology.” Could be edited by us five (Fischer, de Munck, Kronenfeld, White, and Bennardo, in any order), as with Wiley’s Cog-Anthro. A good part of the work is done. Initial chapters are tentative for roughly 28+ chapters, drafted & needing editing; Dave not yet an author so can choose his contribution. Introduction still needs revision by us as editors. Parts are tentatively edited for a Preface, Intro; most of the sections in the outline attached have been initially submitted by authors. Main sections are separated into: I History of Cross-Cultural Anthropology, II Theory and Datasets, III Method, IV Religion and Prosocialities, V Social Networks, and VI Overview. Final Conclusion and/or Afterword needed. Open for further suggestions. I can send the current author drafts to match the chapters, as yet a couple of rounds of edits by the authors and a few further edits by me.

The five of us could wrap it up with additional editing or overlaps among our editors. I can enclose tentative chapters/sections/papers initially or the whole batch all at once, let me know which you prefer.

All the best wishes & thanks,

-- Doug White

  • Sent to Joe White, Tanya McMullin 0,00,--- to 03, 05-07(08?) – do the rest! do 29 chapters.
  • Giovanni Bennardo: There are authors with multiple entries and I do not think that it would be an appropriate step to take. At the same time, if you are worried about number of chapters, consider that in the Companion we edited (David, Michael, Victor, and I) there were only 29 chapters and the other Companion I know well (Linguistic Anthropology) only has 22 chapters. So, why worry about having so many? Like 40? I would chose the best 20-25 and go with those chapters instead of expanding with multiple entries by one author and/or inappropriate entries from not 'real' cross-cultural researcher. Just my 2 cents. Dont have same author for two+ chapters. 01,02,03,05,06,07,09,10,11,12,13,14,16,17,18,23,24,25,27,30,31 (21 total?) plus attached Authors list, Preface and an overview in 32. Each has an initial abstract. Some of those in the list of 31 main chapters are whittled down to fit the Wiley book length. Shall I send the named chapters above in groups of five? Doug to Murray: The book truly needs this chapter; I have read it carefully and repositioned it after section I, in a new section II. Once you're done we can look at and improve my long historical chapter in section I with some editing. We're fully on the same page in these two.

Thanks very much for doing this chapter, it was very much needed.

That’s really great to hear that the book is complete. I will leave it in Silvy’s capable hands for the manuscript assessment and to prepare it for production. I do have access to the dropbox so I will take a look there. I have asked our Editorial Assistant, Joe White, to tie up any loose ends and to check that all of the Contributor Agreements have been issued now that we have the finalised list of contributors so you may hear that these are on their way. Dear Doug

Please do not edit anything just yet. I am wary of removing whole chapters as I appreciate your opinion and editorialship that all chapters will positively help sales. Please let me look through the manuscript in full myself, in addition to my continuing discussions with our Production department and I will come back to you, hopefully later on today. With kindest regards

Doug says: Let's take out, simply looking at TOC, the following chapters, including their mentions in Authors, the Chapters contents list, Preface, and Part I discussion :

02 Leaf, 07 Wes Routon, 13 Wynn, 16 White, 21-22 Chick, 26 Hudson, 32 White et al

this should lead much closer to 275,000 words, 50 figures, and closer to 90 tables. If we're still significantly over, we can subtract 17 White and Routon.

Does that work? If so, I'll edit the appropriate Authors, Chapters contents list, Preface, and Part I.

Thanks, Doug

May 2017 Wiley Tanya McMullin REDUCE PAGE NUMBERS

Dear Doug

Joe has passed on your email below for my reply.

I have been in touch with Catherine with regard to your figures as I’m afraid there are far too many over the contracted amount. Simply put, we contracted 275,000 words and 50 figures as this would produce a book approximately 600 pages which is standard for our Companions. From estimated production figures based on the manuscript you have submitted there is 272,933 words, 84 figures and 119 tables which has amounted to an estimated page count of 750 pages. This size of Companion puts extreme pressure on the spine in production (whether it is hardback or paperback) and in addition makes my life rather difficult in receiving approval for the costs of production. I cannot increase the price any more than our standard prices due to the market of our competitors to cover this cost.

I am going to work with my colleagues in production to see if there is anything we can do in typesetting to reduce the number of pages but it would be greatly appreciated if you would be able to compromise with me and just have another look through the manuscript to see if there are any figures or tables which are not essential.

I look forward to hearing from you.

With kindest regards

Dear Doug,

Unfortunately I have no record on Echo Sign of you signing any of the agreements. Did you follow the instructions in my initial email? Follow the link, scroll to the bottom of the document where the signature line is, and then simply fill in the signature field and then click the blue ‘SIGN’ button. This will automatically save a copy for our records, and I will receive a notification, so there is no need to notify me or send me a signature page, as helpful as that is.

Please let me know if you require more detailed instructions (screenshots etc.).

May I ask you a question?

Do we have an agreed word limit for the contributions? Usually there is either an approximate word limit or an agreed maximum limit.

With all best wishes, Joe

Korotayev and de Munck. Vicious to Virtuous Cycles. doug if you need, and if you think this paper is appropriate, it may work for the Wiley handbook. Andrey and I wrote it last year. We almost published it in an economic development journal but they wanted us to add more theory. otherwise they had no significant criticisms and liked the paper. we didn't do that for a variety of peripheral reasons. The good thing about the paper is that it uses statistical cross-cultural data to demonstrate that there is convergence rather than divergence going on across cultures and divergence within cultures (this latter point is implied and not demonstrated). Most developmental economists seem to argue for cross-cultural divergence and vicious cycles, meaning that the HDI measures between advanced and "third world" countries are diverging; we show that there is a recent trend toward virtuous cycles (or convergence). Andrey & de Munck. anyway here it is.

Check Str&Dyn /Fischer Re: World Cultures. Very pleased to hear such a good prognosis! I have agreed with Giovanni Bennardo to edit the special issue. And I will be pleased to take over World Cultures for a while as general editor, and help find a successor down the road. If you want I'll talk to Stephen Lyon about taking on Structure and Dynamics, as he may be keen to do so, or recommending someone else to do so. (Should have logins this week.)

You wrote this earlier -- would you like chapters -- 3 and 5 from Part 2? (4 is not ready but in early draft) -- 7 and 8 of part 3? -- 12 and 13 and 15-16 of part 4? -- 17 18 and 20 21 23 24 of parts 5 and 6? those are in the best shape for the manuscript

probably an additional 4-6 months will bring most of the others into shape for the complete manuscript.

Mar 18, 2015 Dear Roshna,

You asked me when the complete set of chapters will be done so that we can start with the proofreaders. I attach the Preface to the Volume and my 36 page Chapter 1 for safekeeping. 33 Chapters are in, 11 still to come in, some of which will not be published. Those remaining 8 or so that are expected will be finished within three months, so that is my estimate of when the proofreading will begin.
